Summer 2021 Faculty-Student Teams Applications

Nebraska MRSEC 2017College Science Faculty and Students
Nanoscience Research Opportunity
at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) invites applications from Professor-Student Teams from four-year colleges and universities to become engaged in research during the summer of 2021.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Nebraska MRSEC conducts state-of-the-art interdisciplinary experimental and theoretical research on Polarization and Spin Phenomena in Nanoferroic Structures, involving faculty and students from multiple STEM departments.

Part of MRSEC’s mission is to provide research experiences and opportunities to faculty and students from high schools, colleges, and universities outside UNL. This is your opportunity to become involved in one of our research thrusts, including:

  • Functional magnetoelectric materials and interfaces
  • Molecular-level magnetoelectrics
  • Polarization-enabled functional materials and properties
  • Low-dimensional molecular ferroelectrics

It is anticipated that the collaboration between MRSEC and the Professor-Student Team’s home institution will continue during the 2021-2022 academic year.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to participate in this program. Professors will receive a summer stipend of $5,000/month for up to two months of full-time commitment, and each student will receive $500/week plus room and board for up to 10 weeks of commitment to their project. Up to 2 students per team can be supported.

Please visit our website at mrsec.unl.edu for a full listing of research projects and additional information, and contact MRSEC Education/Outreach Director Prof. Rebecca Lai with any questions.

Applications should be submitted by email to MRSEC Assistant Director for Education and Outreach Jocelyn Bosley (jbosley@unl.edu). Application materials for each Professor-Student Team should be combined into a single PDF file under the name “PROFLASTNAME SCHOOL 2021 REU application.pdf,” and should include the following information:

  • Cover sheet (download here)
  • Full curriculum vitae for professor and each student
  • Brief description of each student’s anticipated career path
  • First, second, and third choices of research groups to join (information at mrsec.unl.edu)
  • One-page statement of expectations regarding how this research experience will impact education and

research efforts at the applicants’ home institution

Application deadline: March 1, 2021
