Seventh Graders Make Nanowires
Nebraska MRSEC researchers Bernard Doudin and Carolina Ilie visited Scott Middle School in Lincoln to discuss advances in nanotechnology. The students made their own batches of silver nanowires with diameters ranging from 30 to 80 nm by depositing Ag in polycarbonate membranes. They learned how to estimate the wire diameter from the color of the membrane. They also showed that a single membrane of 1 cm diameter contained more wires than the number of people in the USA.
